Based on a 15th-century German woodcut dating to 1474. It originally appeared in the text Speculum Abominatium in Oculis Domini ("Mirror of Abominations in the Eyes of the Lord"), authored by Franciscus Grontius of Leipzig.
The scene depicts a highly ritualized execution method known as "death by sawing". Historically applied as a brutal punishment for treason, rebellion, or heresy, the practice involved suspending the condemned upside down. This specific positioning intentionally forced blood to the head to oxygenate the brain, prolonging the victim's consciousness and agony while the two executioners worked.
40cm x 30cm, Engraved on solid aged wood - Ready to Hang.
